5 Things Photographers Wish You Knew Before Your Family Portrait Session

Many parents like to prepare for their family portrait session by planning outfits and logistics to help make sure everything goes smoothly on the big day. Those are great ways to get ready, but we know things don't always go to plan, even with the most thorough preparations and best intentions. Luckily, the day doesn’t need to be perfect to be a success. Here are five things photographers wish you know before your family portrait session.

1) If your kiddo isn't smiling, that's OK.

There is no way to guarantee that your kiddo will be happy and smiling during your session. And that’s OK! We can work together to capture beautiful family photos that you will love. As a mom of three small children and a professional photographer for almost 20 years, I have come up with some easy ways to help an unhappy child. See What if my child isn’t in a good mood during family portraits? for a few tips!

2) You're doing a great job.

Wrangling the family for portraits is not easy. Many times, family members are resistant because they are not sure what to expect. So, know that you're doing a great job by getting everyone to the session and making it fun. It's safe to say that after your session, your family will say, "That wasn't so bad," or even "That was fun"!

3) It's better to have fun than to try to be perfect.

There is so much pressure today to create a perfect social media-worthy life. Remember, the posted photos are just one moment in the day. A lot happening behind the scenes is probably not so perfect. Having fun with your family is much better than worrying about being perfect. The best photos come from joyful and natural moments!

4) Hugs and snuggles make the photos that much better.

Hugs and snuggles make everything better, but it’s especially true for photos. Whenever someone feels shy or unsure about how to stand or pose, I always suggest loving each other with cuddles and hugs. It comes naturally, instantly eases tension, and produces some of the best smiles!

5) The moments between the poses are some of the best photos.

There is no need to worry about finding the perfect poses you want to capture ahead of your session. Instead, I will help guide you to stand and pose in ways that look natural and are comfortable to everyone in your family. In my experience, the moments between the poses, when you are just being yourselves and having fun together, create some of the best photos!

Now that I’ve shared these secrets with you, I hope you will feel more at ease for your family portrait session. Ready to book a session with me? Visit my booking page for more information.
