What I’ve Learned in 20 Years of Portrait Photography

As I reflect on my journey through two decades of portrait photography, I am overwhelmed by the wealth of knowledge and experiences that have shaped both my work and my perspective on life. From the very first shutter click to the countless smiles frozen in time, each photograph has taught me a valuable lesson. Here are three key insights that stand out among the rest.

1) It's better to have fun than to try to be perfect.

In the pursuit of perfection, it's easy to lose sight of the essence of portrait photography: capturing genuine emotions and personalities. Over the years, I've realized that the most memorable and cherished photos often stem from moments of pure joy. Laughter, playfulness, and candid interactions can create images that resonate deeply.

Striving for technical perfection should never overshadow the true purpose of portrait photography: telling stories. Embracing imperfections and unexpected outcomes can lead to some of the most remarkable and heartfelt pictures. So, let go of the need to control every detail and allow the magic of genuine emotion to shine through.

2) Hugs and snuggles make the photos that much better.

In portrait photography, there's an undeniable power in physical touch. The warmth of an embrace and the tenderness of a snuggle are the elements that infuse a photograph with a profound sense of connection. Over the years, I've witnessed how the simple act of touch can transform a picture from a mere image to a timeless memory.

When people feel comfortable and loved, their genuine emotions emerge. The embrace of a parent, the laughter between siblings, the adoration between partners – these moments of intimacy are what give life to portraits. As a photographer, I've learned that my role goes beyond just capturing light and composition; it's about fostering an environment where emotions can bloom naturally, resulting in photographs that resonate on a deeply emotional level.

3) The moments in between the poses are some of the best photos

While posed shots undoubtedly have their place, some of the most captivating images come from the moments that unfold naturally in between. The unguarded expressions and spontaneous interactions tell a story that words often can't convey. These in-between moments capture the personalities, relationships, and atmosphere.

I aim not to orchestrate every detail, but to observe and anticipate these fleeting moments. Patience has become my greatest ally, allowing me to witness authentic interactions and capture them with my camera. These candid shots often hold a raw and unfiltered beauty that transports viewers back to the very emotions and energy of the moment.

My 20-year journey in portrait photography has been a tapestry of experiences, revelations, and countless memories. Through laughter, touch, and the magic of candid moments, I've learned that the most powerful portraits go beyond technical perfection; they capture the heart and soul of the people in them. Let’s continue to celebrate imperfections, embrace connections, and relish the fleeting instants that truly define our lives through the art of photography.
