How to Pose for your Family Portrait Session

No one wants to feel awkward in their family photos.

After 15 years of being a professional photographer, I’ve discovered the best methods for guiding your family into flattering positions that look natural and make you feel beautiful.

I will tell you how to pose.

No need to worry about where to place your hands.

Or whether you should sit or stand.

Before we even begin taking photos , I briefly explain my specific workflow and shot list that we use during your session.

This includes poses where your family will be sitting or standing.

I’ll even tell you exactly where to place your hands.

And I’ll tell you where to look (either at me or each other).

My shot list makes our time shooting together efficient.

And gives us more time to play at the end so we get some candid portraits as well.

I strive to make everyone forget that they’re having their photo taken and just enjoy each other’s company.

It’s all about me giving you prompts on how to interact so we get genuine expressions and natural body language.

Depending on the ages of your children, I have different prompts I use to get your family to play in front of my camera.

Sometimes it’s a silly noise that I make.

Other times it’s simply making space for quiet smiles.

Or it could be that I encourage you all to snuggle.

So in the end, there’s no need to worry at all about feeling awkward during your family portrait session.

I absolutely love working with all types of families and finding the best ways to make you feel comfortable.
